Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab to participate in a panel discussion on Racial and Economic Equity in Higher Education
Over the past few decades, public financial support for higher education has eroded, especially at the state level. Partly as a result, college costs have gone up dramatically and student aid has failed to keep pace. Student debt now exceeds $1.5T and defaults are projected to reach 40% of all student-borrowers. At the same time, better-resourced colleges, including public flagships, have increasingly moved away from lower-income and middle-class students as they seek full-pay or near full-pay students to make up for budget shortfalls. The end result has been a widening of race and income-based gaps in BA attainment. This panel will discuss what is happening in the higher education ecosystem and what state and federal policies would need to be in place to achieve greater equality of opportunity.
